General view of the Unused Medicines Classification Plant.
The bags with the packaging and unused medicines deposited at the Punto SIGRE in the pharmacies all over Span arrive at the plant.
All the waste is identified according to its origin. The information concerning the classification performed at the plnat can therefore be broken down by the province in which the waste was collected.
The classification process begins when the SIGRE bags are opened and their contents are placed on a conveyor belt that feeds the sorting booth. The empty bags are sent to the pressing and packaging area to obtain the first recyclable fraction.
An initial classification is performed on the conveyor belt leading to the sorting booth. Medicines considered as hazardous are withdrawn and deposited in a water-tight container and sent for controlled disposal.
A second classification is then carried out at a mobile table with a circular belt, and packaging is separated by materials: paper/cardboard, glass, metals, plastic, etc.
The paper/cardboard is separated using the aspiration tubes of the sorting booth, which continually feeds the press preparing the corresponding bales.
Non-hazardous unused medicines and non-recyclable packaging are carried along the conveyor belt to a container located in the loading bay and sent for energy recovery.
This classification process enables the packaging and unused medicines deposited in the Punto SIGRE of the pharmacy to be treated in the best, most environmentally correct way according to their characteristics: recycling of packaging, energy recovery of non-hazardous medicines or disposal of hazardous medicines.
We can all help to promote sustainable and environmentally-friendly attitudes. By using medicines responsibly and depositing them at the Punto SIGRE in our local pharmacy we can all help to take care of our own health and that of our planet.
